Lexical behavior of institutional discourse in calls for scientific proposals from Latin American public universities

Introduction: The recent transformation of higher education in Latin America has intensified the production of institutional discourses aimed at regulating, promoting, and legitimizing university-based scientific activity. In this context, calls for scientific proposals have become strategic documents for the allocation of funding, grants, and incentives. However, despite their influence on shaping research priorities, they have received little attention from linguistic and documentary perspectives. This article aims to characterize the lexical patterns and discursive structures found in calls for scientific proposals from Latin American public universities, focusing particularly on the semantic categories used to construct notions of productivity, innovation, impact, and internationalization.
Methods: A mixed-methods, documentary-comparative study was conducted, based on a corpus of 60 official calls for scientific proposals published between 2020 and 2025. The analysis combined content analysis techniques with a lexical-semantic exploration using Voyant Tools. Titles, objectives, requirements, eligibility criteria, benefits, participation modalities, and complementary promotional discourses were examined.
Results: A high degree of lexical-discursive homogeneity was identified across calls for proposals from different national contexts, structured around five thematic axes: development, productivity, innovation, impact, and internationalization. An "ideal researcher" profile also emerged, characterized by interrelated attributes: proven productivity in indexed journals, an international track record, verifiable leadership, knowledge transfer capacity, and measurable visibility. This profile generates contradictions regarding territorial relevance, the inclusion of emerging researchers, and epistemic diversity.
Conclusions: University calls for scientific proposals function as mechanisms for the symbolic regulation of knowledge; they not only manage resources but also shape institutional representations regarding valid knowledge and the subjects authorized to produce it. Their analysis reveals structural tensions; furthermore, by acting as a form of anticipatory communication regarding science, these documents define the conditions under which legitimate knowledge can emerge in Latin American higher education, offering a significant contribution to the study of institutional discourse and scientific communication in the region.
