The Organization of Evil: Reading Mariana Enriquez's «Under the Black Water» as a Critical Response to Sabato's «Report on the Blind»

Introduction: Early studies of "Under the Black Water" have focused on the story as a work of fantastic horror. By contrast, this comparative study reads Mariana Enriquez's short story as detective fiction: a response to Ernesto Sabato's "Report on the Blind" that challenges its protagonist's neglect of the social context in his inquiry into the workings of evil.
Methods: This comparative literature study is grounded in textual, narratological, and hermeneutic analysis, approaching both texts as exemplary narratives of two competing models of knowledge. As a point of departure for confronting the two texts, it examines the formal features of Report on the Blind, which reveal the deficiencies and progressive deterioration of the inferential method underlying its investigation.
Results: Both texts converge in their attempt to understand evil through the interpretation of evidence associated with polluted waters (a metaphor for what remains excluded). They differ, however, in the scope of their inquiry, the methodology they employ, and the narrative voice structuring each investigation. Report on the Blind operates through allegorical figuration, without direct correspondence to reality. Under the Black Water, by contrast, unfolds in a recognizably real setting shaped by social tensions.
Conclusions: A comparative reading of both texts makes possible: (1) a reading of «Under the Black Water» that is more attentive to its status as a metatheoretical reflection on the limitations of inferential method in the exploration of a form of evil that is social in nature; and (2) a novel reinterpretation of Report on the Blind based on the problematic status of the blind, understood as a paranoid exercise that confines the investigation of evil to the realm of psychology.
