Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: This research examines how Julio Escoto's novel Rey del albor, madrugada (1993) uses heteroglossia to represent national identity and reinterpret the official history of Honduras. The objectives are to identify the types of voices that shape the discourse of the work and how they reveal historically marginalized perspectives in the country's memory.

Methods: A qualitative approach based on Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of heteroglossia is adopted, seeking to understand the dialogue established by the different voices within the novel. The textual analysis focused on recognizing and organizing the voices that produce the polyphony of the work, as well as evaluating the narrative strategies that generate the coexistence of multiple discourses in the narrative.

Results: The results obtained show that heteroglossia is a strategy used by the author in constructing the novel's discourse. The deliberate integration of different registers was identified, especially in nine chapters, and this presence has a direct impact on the configuration of national identity presented in the work. Although historical tradition tends to privilege hegemonic discourses, the analysis showed that Julio Escoto's proposal highlights groups that have been relegated not only in the history of Honduras, but also in Central America and, by extension, Latin America.

Conclusions: It is confirmed that the integration of these diverse marginal records and voices in the novel produces a polyphonic presence that enriches the narrative on national identity. However, far from achieving a harmonious synthesis of Honduran history, the discursive coexistence accentuates the internal conflicts of the identity-building process. In this way, the work shows that this narrative plurality does not necessarily lead to consensus or unity, but rather generates new forms of symbolic confrontation in the country's historical narrative.
